"Onondaga Regiment" or "Independance Guard"

The 12th New York State Militia Regiment was one of many regiments that answered the drumbeat of Civil War in early 1861. Mustered in for 3 months the 12th New York was organized in Elmira New York. The regiment was then transferred to Washington DC for defense of the city and attached to Tyler's division of Irvin McDowell's Army of Northeast Virginia. The 12th took Part in the first Major clash of arms along Bull Run creek near Manassas Virginia on July 20th 1861. The 12th N.Y.S.M. was one of the first units to make contact with the rebels in that battle and were among the first to receive casualties. On August 2nd 1861 the men of the 12th reenlisted for the full term of state service. The 12th went on as part of the Union Army till 1864 when members of the 12th were transferred to the 5th New York Veteran Volunteer Infantry.
