Corporal of the 24th
New York Infantry

The 24th New York Infantry was Oswego County's first regiment raised in response to President Lincoln's 1861 call for 75,000 volunteers. The 24th was a solid, hard fighting unit and part of the "First Iron Brigade" of the Army of the Potomac. During it two-year tour of duty, the regiment participated in the following battles:FALMOUTH, RAPPAHANNOCK STATION, WARRENTON, SULPHER SPRINGS, GAINESVILLE, GROVETON, 2nd BULL RUN, SOUTH MOUNTAIN, ANTIETAM, FREDERICKSBURG, RAPPAHANNOCK CROSSING and CHANCELLORSVILLE. On May 17th, 1863, the remnants of the 24th was ordered back to Elmira New York to be mustered out of service. Before the regiment left the field for New York, nearly fifty men desiring to reenlist along with new recruits recently added to the regiment having additional time to serve, were mustered into the ranks of the 76th New York Infantry.
