54th Massachusetts

The 54th Regiment of Massachusetts Volunteers was one of the premier regiments in the Union Army made up of free Northern men of color; in an age where enslavement and subversion of blacks was an accepted social norm and an economic necessity. The men of the 54th; by their uncompromising discipline and steadfast bravery on the field of battle; had proven forever that black soldiers were in everyway equal to their white counterparts.
