Drummer of the 5th New York Duryee's Zouaves

The 5th New York Volunteer Infantry (Duryee's Zouaves) won acclaim throughout the Army of the Potomac not only for their colorful uniform, but a strict attention to drill, discipline, and steady bearing under fire. Music played an important part in the life of the Civil War soldier, and the Zouaves of the 5th NY were no exception. Each company had a fifer and drummer, and from July of 1861 to August of 1862 the Regiment also fielded a brass band. The musicians were expected to know their business, and the officers of the 5th NY did not hesiate to discharge those who were deemed "incompetent" at their task. But there was also recognition for those who displayed courage under fire, as did 15 year old drummer Robert Daly of Company D - who risked his life to bring water to the wounded on the battlefield of Gaines Mill and was cited in the official reports of that action. This painting captures the pride and determination of the Zouave musicians whose fifes and drums structured and inspired the fighting spirit of the "Red Devils."
