Southern troops of Risden Tyler Bennett's 14th North Carolina infantry stand their ground against William C. Barlow's 61st and 64th New York Regiments. The 14th North Carolina suffer heavy casualties in killed, wounded and captured as the New Yorkers gain a foothold on the sunken farm lane who's name would become synonymous with the Southern fighting will.
