MARITATO PAINTING TO BE USED BY NATIONAL PARK SERVICE IN NEW DISPLAY AT MANASSAS VIRGINIA!
Recently I was contacted by one of the Park Rangers at the Manassas National Battlefield Park in Manassas Virginia and was informed that the Park will be using the Painting "Vortex of Hell" in a new visitor contact station which will be located on the historic Brawner Farm. The Brawner Farm is where Stonewall Jackson's Confederate Division attacked the Union Army and drew it into a vicious stand-up fight which was the opening to the massive two-day battle of 2nd Manassas (2nd Bull Run). The painting will be part of a wall panel exhibit about the 5th New York Duryee's Zouaves during the battle of 2nd Manassas on August 30th of 1862. I am very honored beyond words to have the National Park Service use one of my paintings in this manor on such a historic and significant Civil War battlefield.

A Confederate color sergeant proudly displays his regimental banner in the mid-Fall afternoon sunlight during a brief respite on campaign. Being a member of the regimental Color Guard was not only the most perilous of all posts, it was considered by the solders of that unit to be the most glorious positions of honor. The flag was the symbol of the regiment and an emblem of pride to the soldiers who fought and died under it. Soldiers were habitually trained to follow the flag into battle and never allow it's capture by the enemy. A Color Guard - made up of from 6 to 10 the regiment's stoutest and steady men were charged with the defense of the flag and were not allowed to fire or use their weapons for any other purpose. They were to hold their arms at the shoulder unless the flag was threatened. The color Sergeant's only duty was to carry the flag aloft and make sure it was seen not only by the men in his unit but that the enemy saw it as well. If the color bearer was killed or wounded the next man in the color guard would pick up the flag and carry it onward. This act of heroism to keep the flag flying was repeated in countless instances on many a bloody battlefield throughout the Civil War.

Gouverneur
K. Warren
This brand new painting depicts Chief of Engineers for the
Army of the Potomac General Gouverneur
K. Warren along with Washington A. Roebling
(Son of John A. Roebling - designer and builder of the Brooklyn
Bridge) as well as other noteworthy officers who climbed to
the summit of Little Round Top to asses the situation on July
2nd 1863 shortly prior to the Confederate assault on the Hill.
Warren discovered that only a handful of signalmen were present
on Little Round Top and immediately recognized the danger
to the entire left flank of the Federal Army if troops were
not summoned to occupy the Hill. Warren immediately sent for
any available troops to come and occupy the Hill and within
minutes of recieving Warren's order Colonel Strong Vincent's
brigade of the 5th Corps arrived in the nick-of-time to blunt
a Confederate assault. Shown in the painting are members of
the U.S. Signal Corps along with Warren and Roebling.

Hood's
Texans
This large painting (a 48in x 32in
Oil on Canvas) - a privately commissioned piece - depicts
the assault of General John Bell Hood's hard fighting Texas
Brigade as they begin their assault toward Devil's Den and
the Round Tops on July 2nd, 1863. Shown in this painting is
General Hood at the head of the First Texas Regiment. The
only regiment in the brigade to carry a Texas flag at Gettysburg
(against CS Army regulations). The flag was made from the
wedding dress of the wife of Texas Senator Louis T. Wigfall
and was edged in black crape to memorialize the men of the
1st Texas who were lost in the brutal fighting at the Cornfield
during the battle of Antietam Creek Maryland in September
of 1862. Also shown in the painting is Colonel Philip P. Work
of the 1st Texas and Brigadier General Jerome B. Robertson.
