On The Easel!
I am just begriming work now on a large
private commission piece; a Union Infantry Gettysburg subject
with a legendary commander featured prominently in the painting.
I am hoping to have this painting finished later in 2008.
At the Same time I am also working on a small World War One
Subject. I am also researching a Mexican War subject (Although
that one will take some time to piece together) as well as
a 1st Bull Run piece and a Confederate North Carolina subject
later down the road. - Stay Tuned, the best is yet to come!!!!

The Color Bearers Documentary!
Mark
Maritato will appear in the upcoming PBS documentary film
"The Color Bearers" which is due to be released
in the summer of 2008. Mark's Painting "Sergeant Ben
Crippen" will also be featured in the film.
About the Film
"The Color Bearers" is the story of how the
American Flag symbolizes the spirit of American Patriotism,
and how it came to be that Americans hold dear their national
symbol in a way unlike any other country.
The Story of America's Flag Passion
The film looks at how this Flag culture
evolved, from Betsy Ross - to Iwo Jima - to the flag raised
over ground zero on 9/11, and we meet fascinating people who
bear the colors proudly today in their own unique and interesting
ways.
We meet the descendents of three courageous color bearers
from the Civil War and hear how their heroic ancestors still
influence their lives - and ours - today.

19 Year old Joseph White Latimer was the
youngest Major in the Confederate Army of Northern Virginia.
Having studied artillery tactics at the Virginia Military
Institute under the tutelage of Thomas Jonathan Jackson; Latimer
demonstrated outstanding leadership skills in the opening
days of the Civil War. Latimer's natural skill as an artillerist
earned him the praise from his superiors and subordinates
alike. During the Gettysburg Campaign Latimer was breveted
to the rank of Major, commanding a battalion of 16 guns of
Johnson's Confederate Division. On July 2nd 1863 Latimer placed
his cannons on a sloping rise of ground named Benner's Hill
. For over two hours, Latimer's guns faced off against Union
artillery stationed on Cemetery Hill and Steven's Knoll. Latimer
rode amongst his men shouting encouragement but was soon brought
down by an artillery shell that killed his prized horse and
wounded his right arm. Latimer was evacuated to a hospital
where his arm was amputated. Latimer would die almost a month
later from complications of the amputation. Latimer died only
two weeks short of his 20th Birthday. One of his subordinates
lamented "No heavier loss could have befallen the artillery
of this Corps."
