Retreat Through Gettysburg
Battle of Gettysburg, Pennsylvania
July 1st 1863

The overwhelming Confederate assault on the afternoon of July 1st 1863 forces the Union Army to give up their fight in the rolling farmland to the north and west of town.
Units of the 1st and 11th Corps stumble their way through town and are forced to find their way as best they could to their rallying point on Cemetery Hill which was located Just to the south of Gettysburg. Depicted in this painting is Gettysburg's town square at the height of the retreat.
