In the fall of 1861 the 10th New York Regiment were issued their third uniform. The regiment was also issued a standard Federal uniform to augment the Zouave dress for fatigue duty. This new ensemble consisted of a dark brown Zouave jacket, trimmed in red. The trousers were light blue withe a double red stripe down the outer seam. The regiment would be dressed in this uniform through the Peninsular Campaign in the Spring of 1862. It was during the regiment’s evacuation of the Union Army base camp at White House Landing, Virginia, where the zouave uniforms; having been packed in storage were destroyed in a fire set by the assaulting Southern Army forces. The 10th New York would wear it’s blue federal uniform along with a few surviving remnants of the Zouave uniform during the Second Manassas Campaign in the late summer of 1862.
