Depicted here is the first uniform issued to the 10th New York Regiment in the spring of 1861. Unfortunately for the men, this uniform proved to be very poorly made and fell apart within weeks of the soldiers beginning their drill training at Sandy Hook, New York. The uniform consisted of a blue Zouave Jacket and trousers, both trimmed in red, made from a very cheaply made flannel that many people referred to as “shoddy.” The regiment were also issued fatigue caps of gray cloth in addition to white cloth havelocks and the Zouave Fez. This uniform was quickly replaced by a dark brown uniform of almost the same design.
