Here we have a depiction of a member of the elite Philadelphia German Rifle Regiment of 1861. This particular regiment became one of the companies that comprised the nucleus of the 21st Pennsylvania Regiment: a three month volunteer Regiment that would be commanded by Colonel John F. Ballier. This soldier holds a specialized target rifle known widely as a “Schutzen Rifle,” that was born out of the Turner tradition of forming elite target rifle clubs, and gymnastic societies that would become popular with German immigrants in 19th Century America.
