Here we have a soldier of the 21st Illinois Volunteer Infantry as he would have appeared in 1861. Initially, the 21st were issued the state regulation gray uniforms which consisted of either a short skirted, six button jacket, trimmed in blue as shown here, or a plain gray frock coat with gray trousers. The ensemble was complete with a gray felt dress hat, known as a “Kossuth” style hat that was pinned up on one side and decorated with a red, white and blue hat cord. The regiment wore this uniform during it’s first six month of service as the men underwent their initial training. The gray uniforms would soon be replaced by the standard issue blue uniforms of the Union army which included state issue shell jackets, and frock coats with sky blue trousers. The muskets initially issued to the regiment were smoothbore conversions that were later replaced by Enfield Rifles.The 21st Illinois regiment was mustered into service by Captain Ulysses S. Grant, who would eventually become commander of the Union Army later on in the war.
