Here we have a South Carolinian of A.P Hill’s Division as he would have appeared on the forced-march from the captured Federal army garrison at Harper’s Ferry, (West) Virginia to the battle of Antietam, (Sharpsburg) Maryland on the afternoon of September 17th 1862. This soldier: part of General Maxcy Gregg’s Brigade, is wearing a Federal blue uniform to replace his own badly deteriorating clothing. A.P Hill’s Division arrived on the battlefield in the nick of time to be thrown into a massive counter-attack that stopped Union Army’s final assault upon Robert E. Lee’s right flank. So many of Gregg’s Brigade were dressed in blue uniforms that it caused confusion in the Union Army as to whom the reinforcements were that were arriving on the field.
