Here we have a soldier of the 13th Louisiana Infantry Regiment, (C.S.A) nicknamed the Avegno Zouaves after its founding battalion, completed its organization in August, 1861, at Camp Moore, Louisiana, by combining the six-company Governor's Guards Battalion: a diverse New Orleans unit of French, Spanish, Irish, German, Mexican, and even Chinese immigrants. The unit was supplied with a distinctive Zouave uniforms: blue jackets with yellow/gold piping, red baggy trousers), red skull caps and yellow tassels, modeled after the Imperial Guard Zouaves from France. Initial strength: 1,000 men. Many of the men were recruited in Lafayette, St. Mary, and Tangipahoa parishes. The unit was active in the conflicts at Shiloh, Farmington, and Perryville, then was assigned to D.W. Adams' and Gibson's Brigade, Army of Tennessee. It was consolidated with the 10th Louisiana Infantry Regiment from December, 1862 to April, 1864. The regiment fought with the army from Murfreesboro to Atlanta, endured Hood's winter campaign in Tennessee, and ended the war defending Mobile. The 13th/20th reported 20 killed, 89 wounded, and 78 missing at Murfreesboro, lost more than forty percent of the 289 engaged at Chickamauga, and totalled 191 men and 71 arms in December, 1863. The 13th contained 77 effectives in November, 1864, and surrendered with the Department of Alabama, Mississippi, and East Louisiana. The field officers were Colonels Francis L. Campbell, Aristides Gerard, and Randall L. Gibson; Lieutenant Colonel Edgar M. Dubroca; and Majors Anatole P. Avegno, Stephen O'Leary, and Michael O. Tracy. Total enlistments: 2,449. The regiment's exotic composition and Zouave flair made it a colorful but hard-luck unit, suffering over 80% casualties in grueling Western campaigns.
