The 11th New York Infantry participated in the first major clash of arms between the North and South at the first battle of Manassas, (Bull Run) Virginia on July 21, 1861. By this battle, most of the regiment were re-uniformed, having been dressed in red flannel shirts with dark blue wool trousers: their original uniforms having worn-out due to being of very poor (shoddy) quality. Many of the men in this regiment had also adopted the Zouave Fez as their headgear, but many retained their original caps as well. The 11th New York Fire Zouaves participated in repeated assaults on Henry House Hill, in many cases fighting hand-to hand to help recapture a union artillery battery that was lost in an early assault by the Confederates. Although the 11th New York fought bravely, they were forced to fall back along with the rest of the Union Army.
