April 21, 1836
by Mark Maritato
This painting focuses on the Newport Kentucky Rifles ("The Kentucky Rifles") - a militia company organized by Sidney Sherman. The company carried the white silk "Liberty or Death" flag and was commanded by Colonel Edward Burleson (shown on horse with sword. The men are shown at the trail arms moving forward thought the tall grass to defeat Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna's Mexican Army in less than 18 minutes that resulted in securing the Republic of Texas as well as avenging the fall of the Alamo. The Kentucky Rifle company was organized by Colonel Sidney Sherman in Newport, Kentucky in late 1835 and joined the Sam Huston in Texas in January of 1836. According to a letter written by Sherman's wife to her brother in law of December 8th 1835 the uniforms were described as navy wool coat and navy trousers trimmed in white. By the battle of San Jacinto only about 58 men were still in their original issue uniform. The rest being of civilian or frontier garb.
The Kentuckians were organized into Colonel Edward Burelson's First Regiment of Infantry. The flag was a made of white silk and trimmed in gold fringe with a half-nude female figure holding a sword aloft. From the sword dangles a banner with the motto "LIBERTY OR DEATH." Affixed to the flag pole was a long white glove given to color Sergeant James A. Sylvester by the daughter of the host at a departure dance just before leaving for Texas which he tied on the flag staff. It was said to be a "talisman" and inspired the ranks at San Jacinto. The flag was the only banner carried into the battle and today the original relic is displayed in a glass case behind the speakers podium in the Texas House of Representatives.
