Here we have a Zouave of the 9th New York Infantry Hawkins' Zouaves. Reconstructed here is their first generation uniform that they were initially issued at the outset of the Civil War in 1861 which consisted of a Blue Jacket trimmed in red and magenta as well as a turquoise sash and full blue trousers trimmed in red of the chasseur style rather than the more traditional and baggier Zouave style. The vest was also trimmed in turquoise as shown here. The caps issued to the regiment were a mix between a blue chasseur style with red band as well as the standard federal forage cap. Later, the regiment would be issued fezzes. At the outset of the war the regiment was issued with smooth bore conversions as well as some model 1842 Springfield muskets. These were later replaced by more up-to-date Springfield rifles.
This painting is done on Bristol in acrylic gouache and is signed and dated by the artist.
