This painting was commissioned by the Monmouth battlefield Park in New Jersey for the 2013 relaunch of their newly remodeled visitors center as one of 7 Paintings done specifically for that project. As Sir Henry Clinton's army moved through New Jersey on their way to New York from Philadelphia, elements of the New Jersey Militia and George Washington's force harassed the British along the way. A small-scale, but hot skirmish resulted when the Rebels destroyed the bridge that spanned Crosswick's creek just down the Hill from the Quaker friends meeting house and blocked the British advance for a short period. Clinton called upon the Queens American Rangers under Colonel John Simcoe as well as his Royal Artillery to dispatch the Rebels, the fighting seesawed back and forth across the creek and resulted in the meeting house being struck by a cannon ball that still lodged in the bricks of the North face of the structure to this day.
