George Washington on Perrine's Hill
Battle of Monmouth, New Jersey
June 28, 1778
By Mark Maritato
This painting was commissioned by the Monmouth battlefield Park in New Jersey for the 2013 relaunch of their newly remodeled visitors center as one of 7 Paintings done specifically for that project. This painting shows General George Washington with his staff along with his bodyguard William Lee during the battle of Monmouth on Perrine's Hill at the moment when a British artillery shell smashed the ground right next to the General's horse spraying clods of dirt all over and causing his staff members to panic and urge the General to move to a safer place. Unmoved by the incident, Washington continued to survey his troop and artillery positions while standing rigid up in his saddle.
