(The Black Watch)
American Revolutionary War
By Mark Maritato
Born out of the Jacobite Rising in 1715, The 42nd Royal Regiment of Foot (The Black Watch) had fought in the Americas since the French and Indian War. During the American Revolution, they took part in General George Washington's defeat at the battle of Long Island and later participated in the battles of Harlem, Fort Washington, Piscataway, Brandywine, Germantown, Monmouth and the Siege of Charleston. At the battle of Monmouth, New Jersey in June of 1778, the Highlanders held a position in the Suftin Orchard and faced-off against 400 "picked men" under command of Colonel Joseph Cilley. Although the Highlanders were defeated, they put up a stubborn fight that lasted hours in the 100+ degree heat. The 42nd was returned to Glasow in 1790 and later saw action in the Napoleonic and other wars throughout History with distinction.
